Things have been pretty chaotic since the 2020 election. News outlets as far right as Fox News called the election for Joe Biden, and state voting certifications confirmed that Biden is now President-elect. Biden won 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232 electoral votes. On top of that, Biden won the popular vote with over 81 million votes to Trump’s 74 million.

But despite a decisive victory for Joe Biden, President Trump has shown no signs of conceding the election. He continues to falsely claim that he won and make baseless allegations of voter fraud. As recently as last week, in Georgia at his first rally appearance since the election, Trump falsely claimed, “We’ve never lost an election. We’re winning this election.”

So, will President Trump accept reality and leave the White House gracefully in January? Will he concede the election? Will he run again in 2024? Will he attend Joe Biden’s inauguration? If you piece together different things Trump has said, you will understand what his future holds. Here is everything Donald Trump has said about leaving the White House.

Trump’s refusal to acknowledge losing the election has made voters and politicians alike quite nervous. Some have worried that he may even try to retain power by staging a coup.

However, Trump himself has reassured people this will not happen. On November 26, when a reporter asked him point-blank if he would leave the White House if the Electoral College certifies Joe Biden as the winner, Trump replied, “Certainly I will, and you know that. I will and, you know that.”

Those electoral votes are officially counted by Congress on January 6. Going by Trump’s own words, he will honor that count and leave the White House.

In elections, conceding to a winning opponent has been the norm for many years. But Donald Trump is all about shattering norms, and he’s not stopping with this one.

In the same conference where he confirmed he would honor the electoral college votes, Trump made no assurance that he would ever concede the election in the lead-up to Biden’s inauguration. “It’s going to be a very hard thing to concede because we know there was massive fraud,” he said. Furthermore, he said that “time isn’t on our side, everything else is on our side, facts are on our side, this was a massive fraud.”

Trump has yet to produce evidence of massive fraud, and it seems he may step down from the presidency without actually conceding. Whether this is because he genuinely believes the election was fraudulent or whether it gives him an excuse to keep fundraising is anyone’s guess.

Will Donald Trump run again in 2024?

Plenty of voters assumed that we would never see Donald Trump in politics again if he lost the election. Others think he may make another bid for the Oval Office. That’s the big question: will Donald Trump run again in 2024?

According to Trump himself, the answer to that is an emphatic “yes.” During a Christmas party at the White House on December 1, Trump said (via CNN), “It’s been an amazing four years. We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.”

There is a chance this is just bluster to save face. But to hear Trump tell it, we have not seen the last of him on the national stage.

Will Donald Trump attend Joe Biden’s inauguration?

On January 20, Joe Biden will become president. And one burning question many people have is whether Donald Trump will attend the inauguration, which is customary for departing presidents.

Surprisingly, Trump has said very little on this particular subject, leaving others to speculate on his intentions. When asked if he would attend the inauguration during a Thanksgiving Day press event, Trump responded, “I don’t want to say that yet. I mean, I know the answer. I’ll be honest, I know the answer.”

Given his unwillingness to concede or even believe he lost in a fair election, many assume Trump will simply skip the inauguration altogether. And anonymous sources speaking to Axios claim that Trump is considering holding a political rally in Florida on the day of Biden’s inauguration to announce his 2024 run.

If he does so, he will be the first modern president since Nixon to miss the inauguration of a new president. Though at this point, Trump may want to avoid any further comparisons to Richard M. Nixon!

Will Donald Trump return to real estate?

Despite his movie cameos and reality TV show deals, Donald Trump’s real passion for most of his life has been real estate. It’s the family business, and many wonder whether Trump will return to real estate after leaving the White House.

This is another subject where Trump himself hasn’t said much (largely because discussing his life after politics would mean acknowledging his election loss). But his children have been more candid.

In a September 2019 interview with Mint, Donald Trump Jr. said, “We have voluntarily given up the ability to do new deals internationally while my father is in office.” He continued, “After politics, we would certainly look at India and other markets.”

This seems to be the clearest path to continued profitability for Donald Trump and his family. However, it does bring with it additional ethical concerns about using his status as a former president to generate profit overseas.

Will Donald Trump pay off his debts?

Donald Trump’s entire brand revolves around being wealthy and powerful. This is why it was so shocking to the public to discover how much debt he has when The New York Times released a stunning report on Trump’s tax returns in September. They found that found that Trump has over $300 million dollars in loans coming due in the next four years. Furthermore, they claim Trump paid no income tax at all for 10 out of the last 15 years due to claiming large losses. And Forbes claimed in October that Trump actually has $1 billion of debt.

On top of this, Trump lost a billion dollars of his personal wealth due in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Long story short? Though Forbes estimates Trump’s net worth at $2.5 billion, these loans and losses may seriously threaten his financial future. Furthermore, his recent fundraising efforts for an “Election Defense Fund” include fine print that up to 50% of every single contribution will go towards (via The Guardian) a “general election account for general election debt retirement until such debt is retired.”

It seems like paying off debts is a high priority for Donald Trump after leaving the White House. In fact, he is soliciting donations to do so before he even leaves!

Will Donald Trump pardon himself?

Trump is facing several legal battles once he leaves the White House. However, any federal charges may be useless due to the power of a presidential pardon.

Although Trump claimed he has the power and “absolute right” to pardon himself in a June 2018 tweet, most legal scholars disagree. However, Trump could temporarily step down before Biden’s inauguration, allowing Vice President Mike Pence to become Acting President long enough to grant him a pardon. In fact, New York Attorney General Letitia James predicts this will happen!

However, Trump cannot be pardoned for non-federal charges. There are numerous investigations into Trump and the Trump Organization going on in New York regarding alleged tax fraud. Throw in defamation lawsuits from women who alleged sexual assault and even a lawsuit from his niece alleging fraud and conspiracy, and it seems Trump’s legal battles will follow him long after he leaves the White House.
