Inside The Arrest Of Nancy Pelosi’s Husband

For the most part, we don’t hear a lot about Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul. That makes sense, really: since Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House, she is constantly popping up in different headlines and making different media appearances. By comparison, Paul keeps a low profile.

Until last week, that is. Paul Pelosi was actually arrested for a DUI. Now, he was the Pelosi making headlines, but all of them were bad. And they certainly made Nancy Pelosi, an often-controversial figure, look bad as well.

But what really happened? What do we know about the faithful night Paul was arrested? We have all the answers you’re looking for!

A long-lasting relationship

Even though Paul doesn’t usually generate as many headlines as Nancy, he has been a part of her life for many years. The two got married way back in 1963. Together, they have five children and nine grandchildren!

Some are surprised Nancy Pelosi could balance family life and work life. However, Nancy told The Lily in 2019 that she became very good at balancing the two different worlds. “I became so energized and efficient in the use of time and willing to delegate, to the children, responsibilities. It really shapes you. There’s no question.”

So far, Paul has been good about keeping his own private life out of Nancy’s career. Thanks to the DUI, though, it’s safe to say Paul crashed right in there!

What Nancy has to say about her husband

Since the arrest, Nancy Pelosi has wisely avoided saying anything about her husband or about the incident. Previously, though, she offered an interesting description of Paul. As the Los Angeles Times reports, she said that “He understands politics, but he is not particularly political.” Furthermore, “He’s a businessman. He likes sports. He plays golf and tennis. He’s normal.”

Considering that Paul is rich and well-connected, he’s not exactly “normal” like the rest of us. But he found out that all the money in the world isn’t enough to keep him from getting arrested.

Where was Paul arrested?

Shortly after midnight, Paul Pelosi was arrested in Napa County, California, on May 29. He was arrested for both DUI and having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. That means that his BAC was 0.08% or higher at the time.

What led to his arrest? Paul was actually trying to make a turn around 10:30 when his Porsche was struck by another vehicle. While nobody was injured, the whole incident led to the police ultimately arresting Pelosi.

Paul had a bail set of $5,000 and was out of jail the next morning. According to IB Times, the Pelosis are worth a minimum of $43 million dollars, so $5,000 for bail was basically chump change.

What was Paul doing before the crash?

According to the Daily Beast, Paul’s spokesperson provided a few details about what Paul was doing that night. The spokesperson said that Paul was at a dinner party that night before driving home. Additionally, the party was at a house close to Nancy and Paul’s house, and Nancy was on the East Coast at the time.

The spokesperson also said that Paul “was fully cooperative with California Highway Patrol officers who arrived a few minutes later.” It seems that Paul already knew how bad this was going to make himself and Nancy look and wanted to make sure there were no stories about him clashing with the police who arrived!

Has Paul done anything like this before?

As we noted before, Paul has generally kept a low profile. So the story of him getting a DUI instantly made people wonder if he had a history of driving behavior.

It seems that the likely answer is “no.” One of the more interesting things the Daily Beast reports Paul’s spokesperson saying was that “A prior driving offense erroneously attributed to Mr. Pelosi is untrue and likely refers to another person with the same name.”

Interestingly, nobody seems clear about what “prior driving offense” the spokesperson is referring to that was falsely attributed to Paul. It seems this may be a classic case of the PR specialist getting ahead of a potential falsehood gaining momentum.

Paul’s earlier controversy

While Paul never had any driving scandals before this, he did have a major car scandal earlier this year. In March, SFGATE reports that Paul bought a whopping $2.2 million in Tesla stock. This led to more than a few discussions around the country about whether members of Congress or their spouses should be able to buy stocks since they potentially have privileged financial info.

That controversy was relatively minor, and it did little to tarnish the reputations of Paul or Nancy. But Paul’s DUI scandal is really gaining steam, and this is one of the few times we have something in common with Nancy Pelosi: we’re wondering just how much worse Paul’s scandals (present and future) are going to get!
