If you know anything about Prince Harry, you know that he’s no stranger to making controversial statements. In both his memoir and his Netflix show with Meghan, Harry has spilled some serious tea about the Royal Family. However, he normally limits himself to dishing about the adult members of his family, including King Charles and, of course, Prince William.
Recently, though, Harry took things to a new low when he made shocking comments about two of William’s children. What did he say, exactly? Why did it cause such intense reactions from people around the world, and what does his blunt statement tell us about this rebellious Prince? Keep reading to find out!
A nasty falling out between brothers
Before we get to Prince Harry’s insensitive words about Prince William’s children, it’s important to establish the context between these two. You see, these two siblings have quite a nasty history: once, they were friends as well as brothers, and they had great fun with Kate Middleton as a trio of fun-loving buddies. However, Harry’s marriage to Meghan changed everything: in his memoir, Harry alleged that William labeled Meghan “rude” and “abrasive.” When Harry defended his girl, he claims that things got so bad that William grabbed him by the collar and knocked him over (talk about a royal rumble!).
Harry claimed that William was buying into lies about Meghan spread by the British press. Eventually, the negative headlines got so bad that he and Meghan left England, stepping down from royal responsibilities and eventually moving to America. Once they settled in, the two began airing dirty royal laundry: Meghan accused an unnamed senior royal of questioning the skin color of her baby, causing William to frantically announce on camera that the Royal Family is not racist. Since then, relations between Harry and William have seemingly cooled down, and it’s beginning to look like they may never reconcile.

Prince Harry pouts in front of the world
Historically, Prince William hasn’t said much about his reported beef with Harry, preferring to embody England’s famous “stiff upper lip.” However, Harry has been far more open about discussing their relationship, like when he wrote in his memoir about William allegedly attacking him during their argument about Meghan Markle. Of course, nobody should have been surprised at how messy Harry got in this memoir…in fact, it’s very name was just a way for this Prince to pout in front of the world!
If you don’t already know, Harry named his memoir Spare. Why did he go with this name, though? It comes from the old saying that parents should have two sons: “an heir and a spare.” As the oldest son of King Charles, William was destined to become the future king of England from the moment he was born. Harry had to grow up in his shadow and apparently developed a chip on his shoulder for feeling like the “spare”…that is, someone who would only become important if something were to happen to William.
Judging from both the memoir’s name and its contents, it’s clear that Harry has carried plenty of resentment from not being the first son. Nobody ever thought he would take that resentment out on others, but that’s exactly what happened. And not just to anyone…Harry took out his resentment on William’s two youngest children!
Harry’s shocking statement about William’s children
In 2025, Harry gave one of his relatively rare interviews to The Telegraph. The primary purpose of this interview was to promote the prince’s memoir, but the conversation eventually turned to Harry wanting to be “someone who likes to fix things.” Elaborating on this point, he said that “if I see wrongdoing and a pattern of behavior that is harming people, I will do everything I can to try and change it.”
What does that mean, though? Harry said that he worries about the other “spares,” by which he meant William’s youngest children. “As I know full well, within my family, if it’s not us, it’s going to be someone else.” He went on to say that even though William “has made it very clear that his kids are not my responsibility,” he still feels responsible, knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare. And that hurts, that worries me.”
All of this was presented as Harry’s good-natured concern for his niece and nephew. However, many saw these comments as wildly offensive and insulting for both William and Kate!

Why Harry’s comments were so offensive
Harry made it sound like his comments regarding William’s children came from a place of love and concern. Why were so many people offended by his words, then? Mostly, Harry’s words were a slap in the face to William and Kate as parents. Harry seems to believe that there’s just no way that his brother can show equal love and affection to all of his children and will effectively single one of the younger children out and neglect them.
Needless to say, this fake “concern” says more about Harry than William. Harry seems to be projecting his own Daddy issues onto his brother, effectively making their sibling rivalry that much worse via offensive comments he shared in front of the world. Honestly, this is so petty and sloppy that we can only hope that he finds therapy. After that, he might finally be able to reconcile with the Royal Family after spending years doing his best to anger them at every turn!
